Bermuda's Coral Reefs

An archive, and a proposal to bring it back.

In 1999, the Bermuda Biological Station for Research and The College of Exploration built one of the early ocean-education websites: a rich resource on Bermuda's coral reefs, meant to bring a distant and inaccessible ecosystem into the classroom. Twenty-five years later the science still matters and the content still reads — but the site was built in a way the modern web has left behind. This page is an honest account of what remains, and an invitation to help rebuild it.

What this was

A coral-reef learning resource of roughly eighty topics: basic coral biology and the life cycle of coral; the makeup of Bermuda's patch, boiler, and rim reefs; the reef community of corals, fishes, plants and algae, and zooplankton; and the environmental pressures on the reef — waste and thermal discharge, inshore water quality, monitoring, and fishing. It carried FAQs, an image gallery, sixteen classroom lesson plans with printable activities (some bilingual), and a diary of a 1999 coral research workshop. It was intended to accompany a live, remotely operated camera on the reef — an ambition described in its own archive below.

What still works, what has degraded, what is inert

The coral camera — a documented near-miss

The project set out to place what would have been among the Internet's first remotely operated cameras on a reef seven miles offshore at North Rock, relaying its pictures to classrooms by underwater cable and a microwave link. It was, in the team's own words, “wildly ambitious” — a solar-powered installation on an exposed reef in hurricane country. After two years of genuine engineering effort, a hurricane wrecked the microwave infrastructure that carried the signal ashore, and it was not replaced. The live feed was never realized.

Rather than hide the attempt, we are preserving it. The full installation story and the rescued reef footage are kept as an archive — an honest record of an ambitious idea, what it took, and why it didn't hold.

Rebuilding — the proposal

The content is coherent and worth saving; only the packaging needs replacing. Because every page follows the same pattern, a modern rebuild is largely mechanical. We see three levels, each building on the one before:

Preserve & modernize. The same content rebuilt as a responsive, accessible, mobile-friendly site — framesets gone, links and identity current. Low cost; largely in-house.
Refresh. Updated science and imagery, alignment to the 7 Essential Principles of Ocean Literacy, and light interactivity. A small grant or sponsorship.
Reimagine. A new interactive ocean-literacy resource with new media and classroom units, co-developed with a partner such as ASU BIOS. Grant-funded.
